You seemingly have everything: the corporate career, the big paycheck, the happy family. And yet, you yearn for more.
More women than ever are working in leadership positions within the corporate world. With the ability to pursue any career and any position, it’s easy to believe that the glass ceiling has all but disappeared.
Unfortunately, that’s not the case; it’s simply there for a different reason.
That empty, overwhelmed, stuck feeling, when you know you should be thankful for what you have, is the new glass ceiling. Even with the enviable corporate career and comfortable paycheck, you’re still overwhelmed and unhappy at work. If only there was a way you could leverage your passion without giving up everything you’ve worked so hard to build… I’m here to tell you that it’s possible. It all starts with finding your passion.
Here’s a few small steps to help you get there:
Try new things (even if you think you won’t like it)
It’s easy to get into the routine of daily life. Get up, go to work, eat dinner, and go to bed. Some days you may attend a soccer game, and other days you may go to a PTA meeting. No matter what your schedule looks like, it repeats day-in and day-out. If you want to find your passion, get out there and try new things.
Ride in a hot air balloon, volunteer at a homeless shelter, skydive, or join an intramural sports team. Even if you think you won’t like it, you should try anyway. Whether you end up liking it or hating it, you’re still one step closer to finding your passion.
Throw out the to-do list and have a little fun
Chances are, you’ve got quite a hefty to-do list. Dishes, dinner, laundry, lawn work, paying bills… The list truly never ends, which is why it’s so easy to feel like a failure when you don’t get everything done in a day. Having such a long list can definitely get in the way of having fun. After all, if you have a little free time, you’re more likely to complete something on that list than go outside and have some fun.
Although it’s possible to find your passion hiding in a to-do list, your passion is more likely to show itself when you’re doing the things you love. Play games with your kids, go on long walks, go shopping, and finish that scrapbook or read a good book. What you love to do in your spare time can lead you to your passion. And don’t worry. Your to-do list will still be there when you get back.
Embrace a little peace and quiet
Hectic, busy lifestyles breed noise, but all that noise can block out your passion. When it comes to finding your passion, it’s important that you embrace a little peace and quiet.
You’re probably thinking that’s impossible. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to quiet your surroundings for just a few moments each day:
- Try meditating. Even meditating just a few minutes each day can bring unexpected insights.
- Go for a walk alone.
- Turn off the radio when driving to and from work.
- Take a bath and light some candles to set the mood.
The more you experience little moments of peace and quiet, the more you’ll be able to reduce that feeling of being overwhelmed.
Follow your heart and listen to your intuition
When you start spending quiet moments alone, you’ll likely rediscover your intuition. The more you listen to this quiet voice, the closer you’ll get towards following your heart.
Even if it seems scary to step away from your corporate job in order to follow your passion, you know deep down inside it’s the only way you can find happiness. When you start with small steps toward your balance and happiness life changes and the bigger steps don’t seem so big anymore.
